Houston’s kosher dining scene has lost one of its most prominent establishments. Genesis Steakhouse & Wine Bar, which served the Meyerland area for over a decade, officially closed its doors on April 30, 2025. The closure marks the end of a 12-year run for the upscale kosher steakhouse that became a hub for celebrations, business dinners, and community gatherings.
The team at Genesis shared a heartfelt farewell on social media, thanking customers for their support and memories. Over the years, Genesis wasn’t just a restaurant—it was a place for simchas, milestones, and meaningful moments within Houston’s Jewish community.

Certification Revoked and Business Fallout
The closure stems from a controversy earlier this year when Genesis lost its kosher certification from the Houston Kashruth Association (HKA). During a surprise inspection in January, HKA officials found a package of frozen fish in the restaurant’s freezer without proper documentation. Owner Jason Goldstein stated that a key staffer responsible for handling invoices was unavailable during the inspection, leading to the missing paperwork.
Following the revocation, the restaurant quickly obtained new kosher certification under KBY (Kosher Bet Yosef), which allowed Genesis to resume serving the community. However, the incident had already triggered the cancellation of hundreds of thousands of dollars in catering and private events. The resulting financial blow made it difficult for the business to recover.
From Genesis to Exodus: New Non-Kosher Concept Takes Over
Rather than close up shop completely, Goldstein decided to pivot. Genesis was rebranded as Exodus Bar & Grill, which launched immediately following the kosher restaurant’s closure. The new eatery is not kosher, will be open 7 days a week, and will serve treif foods.
The name “Exodus” is a symbolic nod to both the biblical transition from Genesis and a break from the limitations of kosher operation. By shedding the constraints of kashrut, the restaurant is able to open on Friday nights and Saturdays, which was previously prohibited.
Genesis Steakhouse & Wine Bar was located at 80 Braeswood Square, Houston, TX 77096.
