Houston’s Genesis Steakhouse Loses Kosher Certification Amid Controversy, Gains New Supervision

Genesis Steakhouse & Wine Bar, a longstanding kosher dining institution in Houston since 2015, is at the center of a major controversy after losing its kosher certification from the Houston Kashruth Association (HKA). The restaurant, known for its upscale steakhouse experience catering to the local Jewish community, had its certification revoked, sparking debate and concern among customers. However, Genesis has now obtained new certification from KBY Kosher Bet Yosef, ensuring that it continues to operate under strict kosher standards.

According to reports, the dispute stems from alleged violations of kosher standards, though the exact nature of the infractions remains unclear. HKA issued a statement explaining its decision, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining strict kosher supervision. The move has left many kosher consumers in Houston questioning whether Genesis will pursue recertification or continue operating as a non-kosher establishment.

Genesis Steakhouse has strongly pushed back against the decision, maintaining that it has always prioritized high kosher standards. In a statement, restaurant owner Jason Goldstein claimed that the revocation was not due to actual violations but rather internal disagreements with the certifying agency. He emphasized that the restaurant has consistently upheld its commitment to Kashrut and will not allow personal vendettas or unsubstantiated claims to undermine the trust built with the community.

To address the situation, Genesis sought guidance from a Bet Din in New York and underwent a rigorous recertification process with a different Kashrut organization. As of January 23, 2025, the restaurant is now certified by KBY Kosher Bet Yosef, which adheres to the highest level of Glatt Kosher standards, including the continued presence of a full-time Mashgiach.

The controversy has led to a division among patrons, with some expressing support for the restaurant while others remain cautious. The situation underscores the broader challenges faced by kosher restaurants navigating certification requirements and community expectations. In cities with smaller kosher dining scenes, the loss of a certification can have significant implications, both for business and for the local Jewish community seeking reliable dining options.

Despite the upheaval, Genesis Steakhouse remains committed to providing high-quality kosher food and serving as a trusted space for the Jewish community. Goldstein expressed gratitude to the restaurant’s supporters, reaffirming that Genesis will continue to uphold its traditions and persevere through the challenges.
