An internet frenzy began last week when Rabbi Mehlman announced that he was no longer certifying By the Way Bakery storefronts in NYC. The bakery is fully gluten-free and one of the few kosher bakeries in Manhattan, making the news a massive disappointment to many.
The OK, which certifies the By the Way Bakery production facility, quickly published a clarifying statement. While the storefronts are no longer kosher certified, there will still be packaged items available with the OK symbol. You can also order in advance and request that your order arrives at the bakery sealed.
The production facility produces all of the baked goods that are sold at the storefronts, so do with that what you will. Crisis averted.

Are your products kosher? Yes, everything we bake is kosher pareve. OK Kosher Certification supervises all baking at the By the Way Bakery commissary kitchen in Pleasantville, New York. The By the Way Bakery commissary kitchen produces all of the baked goods sold in all By the Way Bakery retail shops. OK Kosher does not supervise any of our By the Way Bakery retail shops. However, you can purchase items in our shops that are in sealed packaging bearing the OK symbol. You can also order in advance and request that any item on the By the Way Bakery menu arrives at the shop in sealed packaging bearing the OK symbol. These pre-packaged items are the only items certified by OK Kosher.
Are your products kosher for Passover? Our baked goods are always wheat-free, dairy-free, and kosher pareve. All of the items on our Passover menu are consistent with the Sephardic tradition of using kitnyot (rice and corn) during Passover. However, our baked goods are NOT kosher for Passover because our ingredients, while certified kosher, are not certified “Kosher for Passover”.
