✈ Keeping Kosher in Milan, Italy

Contributed by: Abbie Rosenbaum-Braha | Last Travel Date: [Author lives in Milan]

Kosher Info: Milan’s kosher community is well served by three small supermarkets which carry just about anything that one could want. The following website gives a thorough listing of all kosher and Jewish establishment in Milan and throughout Italy: http://www.jewishitaly.org. If you will be in town over Shabbos the Re Solomone offer complete Shabbos meals which must be picked up there on Friday during regular hours. Please note that many shops and all restaurants close in the afternoon. Jewish Italians eat lunch at 1pm and eat a late dinner, so if you’re hungry between 2pm and 7pm you’ll need to consider fresh fruit. Restaurants charge a cover fee (1-2.5 Euros per adult), but tipping is not necessary.

You can use http://www.torinoebraica.it/listakasher.php to locate kosher food which can be purchased at any Italian supermarket. This list is in Italian (the foods which you might really need … Kellogg’s cereal, tuna fish – Palmera and Rio Mare brands, some cheese (fromaggi), and a short list of cookies and crackers).

Tourist Info: For a vacation in Italy, Milan doesn’t offer much to tourists, so if your not coming on business, you’d do well to spend your time in Venice or the Lakes. The shopping however, is great.

  • before we went to Italy we got info from Abbie about kosher yogurt, cheese, tuna (which we found, imported from Italy, in Greece too) and cereal and it saved us. It was really cheap because it was just normal Italian food and we were able to find it everywhere even in the small towns in cinque terra (which everyone should go to) you can check my post for more comments on where to go. But use Abbie’s list for food.

  • Please help me get in touch with Abbie Rosenbaum-Braha. My daughter will be studying in Milan and it would be very helpful to have an English speaking person to ask questions about the city and Jewish community
    Thanks

  • Abbie is no longer living in Milan, she moved to Israel. But I am still living in Milan so you can write me for any info and I will be happy to help you.

    • Dear Ruben,
Shavua tov! Shalom from Israel! We are two families arriving for a vacation on Tuesday August 19. We want to know where to shop, what the shops sell, what days they are open, and what hours they are open. We want to know where to buy fresh or frozen kosher meat, chicken, cheeses, yogurt, breads. We are renting a house near Lake Como, in Concenedo, Barzio, (Lecco). Thank you, shavua tov, Shoshana

      • BS”D

        Hi Shoshana, shavua tov.

On August most of the kosher places are closed. This year you are lucky there is the kosher dairy restaurant (they make very yummi pizzas and nice pasta) is open. Place is called “Carmel”(http://www.carmelkosher.it/).

Opposite Carmel there is a supermarket (“Carrefour”) and they have a department where they sell some basis kosher food, including sometimes frozen kosher meat.

For more infos, write me an email: i-e-l-e-d-t-o-v A-T h-o-t-m-a-i-l . c-o-m (of course, remove the “-“, the ” ” and replace “A-T” with “@”).
