Chap-A-Nosh of Brooklyn Has Closed After More Than 4 Decades

Chap-A-Nosh of Brooklyn, a kosher institution in Midwood that had been feeding the community for more than four decades, has permanently closed its doors. Owner Elie Pollak informed the public on April 7, 2026, that the day would be the restaurant’s last.

Pollak described the decision as a difficult one, thanking his staff for their dedication and friendship over the years. “This is not an easy decision on my part,” he wrote.

Over 4 Decades of Service to the Brooklyn Jewish Community

According to the restaurant’s own listing, Chap-A-Nosh had been serving the Brooklyn area for more than 40 years, placing its origins in the early 1980s or possibly earlier. That kind of longevity is rare in any restaurant industry, let alone kosher dining. Over the decades, it became a fixture of the Midwood neighborhood, known for its Chinese-American kosher menu and its casual, community-oriented atmosphere.

The operation had grown well beyond a single restaurant. Next door, the family ran Yun Kee, a sit-down Chinese restaurant, as well as Chap-A-Nosh Plus, a takeout spot that also housed a butcher, a bakery, and Shabbos food offerings. Whether those adjacent concepts are also affected by the closure is not yet known.

5 Towns Catering Operation Still in Service

It is worth noting that Chap-A-Nosh’s catering operation in the 5 Towns remains open and is unaffected by the Brooklyn closure. The catering business operates from a kosher deli and takeout counter inside the Gourmet Glatt supermarket in Cedarhurst, New York.

No information has been shared regarding any plans for a successor restaurant concept at the Brooklyn location.

Chap-A-Nosh of Brooklyn was located at 1426 Elm Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11230. It is now permanently closed.
