Lieberman’s Luncheonette in Boro Park, NY Plans to Close After Nearly 60 Years

Lieberman’s Luncheonette, the kosher dairy breakfast and lunch spot on 16th Avenue in Boro Park, plans to close once its building is sold. Owners Shloimie and Roz Lieberman have listed the property for $2.8 million. No closing date has been set, and the luncheonette remains open while the sale is pending.

The Lieberman family has run the luncheonette since 1968, when Jacob and Tillie Lieberman bought it. The dining room has four wooden tables that seat 12 and a counter with 10 more seats. Eggs are cooked to order in individual pans in front of the customer, never on a grill, the method Tillie used decades ago. The Liebermans check each egg for blood spots before cooking, and the milk, cheese and butter are Cholov Yisroel.

Six Decades of Egg Salad, Tuna Salad and Salmon Croquettes

Shloimie grew up in the business and learned the recipes for egg salad, tuna salad and salmon croquettes from his mother. He took over after his father died in 1990 and kept the old routines, including coffee brewed in coffee pots. Jacob was a longtime member of Young Israel of Boro Park, which later merged with Congregation Beth El.

The couple live in Staten Island and usually leave home around 6 a.m., stopping at a kosher bakery for rolls and supplies before opening in Boro Park. Shloimie told Patch that after 55 years in the business, he and Roz want to spend more time with their grandchildren. He cannot guarantee that a future owner will keep the same recipes or cooking methods, and he has no plans to dictate whether the restaurant continues under new ownership.

Other Old Boro Park Names Still Serving

Lieberman’s is one of several long-running kosher spots in Boro Park. On 13th Avenue, Amnon’s Kosher Pizza and Falafel first opened in East New York in 1959 as Levy’s Kosher Pizza, then moved to its current Boro Park location in 1970 and took the Amnon’s name in 1988.
