One of NYC’s oldest kosher pizzerias is shutting its doors permanently. Shimon’s Pizza in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens (technically “Flushing”) will be open tomorrow June 30th for the last time.
The pizzeria has been open for over 53 years, since 1969, and for those who grew up in KGH, the store holds fond memories and nostalgia.
To quote Avi Brum, longtime (former) KGH resident, reminiscing about the good ol’ days on Main Street: “Friday lunch was crazy as was Motzei Shabbos on those early Shabbosim. Lines out the door, no seats, people in rollerblades, lots of pre-teens and teenagers. But it was truly awesome, just rocking, the Snapple wrapper days. Fresh hot pizza w/ burning hot French fries and an ice cold Snapple with 6 ppl squeezed on a 4-seater table w/ 2 ppl standing in the aisle stuffing pizzas down their throats, while looking over their shoulders to see who’s checking out who, that’s the perfect pizza experience.”
The location will be returned to the landlord. It is not clear at this time what will replace Shimon’s.
