Planning your next trip to Israel? Make sure you’re aware of a new travel regulation coming into effect on January 1, 2025. All visitors to Israel will now require an ETA-IL entry permit or a visa to enter the country. This important update is intended to streamline entry into the country, but travelers will need to ensure they’re fully prepared before arriving.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new system, including how to apply, costs, exemptions, and helpful tips to simplify the process.

What is the ETA-IL Entry Permit?

The ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital permit required for visitors to Israel. This online system will allow most travelers to apply quickly and easily for entry clearance before arriving in Israel. The permit is valid for two years from the date of issue, making it a convenient option for those who plan to visit Israel multiple times.

Who Needs an ETA-IL Permit or Visa?

Starting January 2025, all visitors to Israel will need an ETA-IL permit or a visa, with the following exceptions:

Israeli citizens or those with an Israeli identity number are exempt from this requirement.

Dual passport holders with foreign passports can continue traveling on their foreign passports until December 31, 2025. After that date, the ETA-IL will be required for foreign passport holders traveling to Israel.

How to Apply for an ETA-IL Permit

The process for applying for the ETA-IL permit is straightforward and entirely online. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth application:

1. Visit the official website: Israel Entry Portal.

2. Provide your personal details, including full name, date of birth, and nationality.

3. Enter your travel information, such as the purpose of your visit and your intended arrival and departure dates.

4. Upload your passport details, ensuring your passport is valid for at least six months from your travel date.

5. Submit a clear photo that meets the specified requirements.

Once submitted, you should receive confirmation of your application within a short period, ensuring you’re ready to travel.

What Does It Cost?

Starting January 1, 2025, the ETA-IL permit will cost 25 shekels (approximately $7 USD at the current exchange rate) per person. If you’re planning to travel with family members, each person will need to complete the application process individually and pay the respective fee.

Good news: During the pilot phase, which lasts until December 31, 2024, obtaining an ETA-IL is voluntary and free of charge. Travelers planning to visit Israel during this period can apply for their permit early and avoid the fee.
