UPDATED 8/5/24: United & Delta Airlines both announce flight cancellations in and out of TLV for the entire month of August, through at least 8/31/24.

Several major airlines have announced the suspension of flights to Israel starting Thursday, August 1, 2024, due to heightened security concerns and escalating regional instability. This development has significantly impacted travel plans during the busy summer season, causing inconvenience for many passengers.

Airlines and Dates of Cancellations

  • United Airlines: Halting flights from August 1, 2024
  • Delta Airlines: Halting flights from August 1, 2024
  • British Airways: Halting flights from August 1, 2024
  • Air Canada: Flights to Tel Aviv canceled on July 30 and 31, 2024
  • Lufthansa: Flights suspended starting August 1, 2024
  • Austrian Airlines: Flights suspended starting August 1, 2024

These suspensions reflect the “airlines’ commitment to passenger safety amid the ongoing tensions.” The decisions were made following rising instability in the region, making it necessary for these airlines to suspend operations temporarily.

Despite these cancellations, there are still airlines that continue to maintain their flight schedules to and from Israel. Notably, El Al, Israel’s national carrier, remains committed to operating its flights, providing a critical travel option for those needing to fly to Israel during this period.

Not the First Round of Flights Cancelled to Israel in the Last Year

The current wave of flight cancellations to Israel follows a pattern established during the initial escalation of conflict on October 7, 2023. On that date, numerous airlines suspended their operations to Israel due to the outbreak of hostilities, which saw increased rocket fire and other security concerns. This led to a significant disruption in travel plans for thousands of passengers and a ripple effect across international travel networks.

During the October 2023 conflict, major carriers including United Airlines, Delta Airlines, British Airways, and Lufthansa were among the first to halt flights. The cancellations were immediate and widespread, reflecting the severity of the security situation. Airlines took these steps to ensure the safety of their passengers and crew, as the unpredictability of the conflict posed too great a risk for continued operations.

The precedent set by the October 2023 suspensions highlights the airlines’ cautious approach to regional instability. By suspending flights early in the conflict, these airlines demonstrated their commitment to safety and their ability to respond swiftly to emerging threats. This cautious approach has been mirrored in the current situation, as airlines once again prioritize safety in the face of escalating tensions.

Airlines Still Operating to Israel

  • El Al: Continuing regular flights

Travelers affected by these cancellations are advised to stay updated with their airlines for the latest information on rebooking options or refunds. The situation remains fluid, and further changes to flight schedules could occur. Passengers should monitor updates closely and consider alternative travel arrangements if necessary.

Alternatively, El Al Airlines remains as an alternative airline that will nearly always be flying in and out of Israel.
