Kosher Chinese Restaurants · 洁净中国餐馆 · מסעדות סיניות כשרות

There is now a silly tradition that many Americans hold Christmastime each year… to indulge in Chinese cuisine. Since the Chinese do not celebrate Christmas, like us Jews, their restaurants have no need to take a hiatus on Xmas day.

In honor of this wacky tradition, we’ve compiled a list of Chinese restaurants (both sit-down & take-out) for your convenience.

Los Angeles, CA >> Focus on SushiKo

Dani Klein from http://yeahthatskosher.com checks out kosher restaurants for Jewish Travel TV.

SushiKo is a modern sushi restaurant right in the heart of the Jewish community of Los Angeles on Pico Blvd. The sushi is outstanding, and there are TV screens which allow you to watch the chefs making your sushi live. Highly recommended.

Delice Bakery is a delicious French bakery on Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA. They offer a variety of different breads, fancy cakes, pastries and cookies. My personal favorite are the croissants, either plain or chocolate filled.

Los Angeles, CA >> Focus on Kosher Subway

November 28th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in California, USA
Google Buzz

Subway is a deli restaurant chain that is popular for its freshly baked bread and meat subs. We checked out one of the kosher Subways in the U.S., this one on Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA. They offer a variety of different breads, meats, vegetables, and sauces. They’re also open late which makes them quite convenient.

Los Angeles, CA

November 15th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in California, USA
Google Buzz

Contributed by: Dani Klein | Last Date of Visit: November 2008

Hollywood SignKosher Info: Los Angeles proper has one main drag of kosher restaurants, eateries, and markets. Basically everything I came across on my visits is on Pico Blvd. near Robertson Blvd. (aptly named the Pico-Robertson area). On Pico you will find Nagila Meating Place (meat) and next door, Nagila Pizza: Simple kosher fast food. Additionally on Pico you will find: Pico Kosher Deli: great deli-style eats, a Glatt Kosher “Subway”, and numerous other cafes, delis, pizza joints, and other establishments that I’m sure I’ll leave out. Also on Pico there is Sinai Kosher Market, Doheny Kosher Meat Market, and other small kosher markets to get whatever you need. Few kosher establishments exist in the LA area outside of the long Pico strip, and if you know of them, please share.

Tourist Info: LA LA land is known for Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and famous pretty people. Beverly Hills is mainly a rich residential neighborhood, not worth spending much time, unless you’re stalking celebs. Now, I must say, I’ve been to LA about 5 times in the past few years, and in all honesty, if I didn’t have to go there for work, I probably wouldn’t. Everything in this city is revolving around celebrities or just how one looks. Granted, the Jewish community is partially removed (note the number of Jews in Hollywood) from the celebrity aspect, but the rest of the town is not. Since the city is so spread out, everyone is reliant on their cars, and traffic is unbearable. Public transportation is awful and mainly used by those who can’t afford their own cars. So, unless you’re obsessed with pop culture, don’t waste your time in LA.

If you are however going to be in LA anyways, here are some places to check out. Grauman’s (Mann’s) Chinese Theatre is a famous landmark on Hollywood Blvd. The 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica; nice outdoor shopping, a couple blocks from the beach. Check out Hollywood and Sunset Blvds, and of course get a shot with the Hollywood sign.

If you are into pop culture, look into taking a tour of the various TV & Movie studios in the vicinity. Also, you may be able to attend a free taping of a TV show. The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and many many others are filmed almost daily in LA. Be sure to do your research beforehand to make sure you can get tickets while in town.

While I haven’t visited them, the LA area has quite a few number of amusement parks:

Jewish Info: LA is home to both a large Persian Sephardic community, as well as an Ashkenaz one. Both Aish HaTorah and Chabad have massive buildings on Pico Blvd. in the heart of the Jewish area. There are about 15+ Chabads in different neighborhoods throughout the metro LA area. There are quite a few shuls in the Beverly Hills & Pico/Robertson areas. To get a full list of all shuls in the LA area, check out the LA Jewish Journal’s Synagogue Directory (only the shuls marked with an O (Orthodox), MO (Modern Orthodox), or SO (Sephardic Orthodox) are frum). Once you’ve located the shul closest to you, a mikvah shouldn’t be far.

Silicon Valley, CA

October 22nd, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in California, USA
Google Buzz

Contributed by: Erica S.  |  Last date of travel: Currenlty Resides in SV

San Jose, Palo Alto, Moutain View, etc.

Kosher Info:

There are a few restaurants located in the Silicon Valley which is defined as stretching from San Jose to South of San Francisco along the Peninsula. Izzy’s Brooklyn Bagels is located in Palo Alto and does the best possible job of imitating a NY Bagel Shop. Open mornings and afternoons, this restaurant is pretty delicious if you are in the mood for a perfect bagel with lox and vegetables. Some parve Shabbat takeout items available as well as Challah. There is a kosher Krispe Kreme Donuts in Mountain View and a new meat restaurant on Castro Street... the sous chef was formerly at Baron Herzog’s Tierra Sur in Oxnard, CA and the menu is expected to be very good.

Kosher groceries are available in the Silicon Valley but the price is marked up from what you would pay in NY or LA. Kosher chicken and turkey as well as other certified products can be found at various Trader Joe’s locations throughout the region. Mollie Stones in Palo Alto has a complete kosher aisle, packed meat, dairy (including Cholav Yisroel products) and freezer section. Lucky in Los Altos and Lucky in Saratoga have 2 full aisles of Kosher goods as well as a large freezer section, and dairy and meat fridges.

Tourist Info:

The Silicon Valley is mostly occupied by residents and businesses and there are not many “touristy” things to do. This isn’t really a vacation destination. However, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay are all within an hour’s drive and all are geared towards tourists. San Jose has a great technology museum and Great America, an amusement park is in Santa Clara.  The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose is enjoyable if you like weird large Victorian houses. One can take a driving tour of high-tech/internet company headquarters (which is fun for the technologically inclined traveler).

Jewish Info:

Palo Alto is home to two orthodox synagogues: Emek Beracha, which is OU Affiliated, and Chabad of the Greater South Bay. There are daily minyanim available. The Dryan Family Mikvah is housed on-site at the Chabad. The Jewish Study Network (Community Kollel) is now located in Palo Alto and offers daily classes for Jewish adults. Palo Alto has an Eruv.

San Jose has an orthodox synagogue called Am Echad which is located in the Willow Glen neighborhood. There is also a Mikvah in San Jose.

Oxnard, CA

August 27th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in California, USA
Google Buzz

Contributed by: Dani Klein | Last Date of Travel: August 2008

Kosher Info: Oxnard, CA houses the Herzog Wine Cellars, one of the U.S.’s finest kosher wine brands. Within the complex there is Tierra Sur, a classy glatt kosher meat restaurant, obviously with a wide selection of kosher Herzog wines. I was only able to try the burger but I was not disappointed! The burger came with sliced heirloom tomatoes, red and yellow, with options to add on: Homemade hickory and maple smoked lamb bacon, sautéed balsamic onions, and Sweet potato fries instead of regular fries. Not only was the burger amazing, but the sweet potato fries were awesome!

As far as I know, Tierra Sur is the only kosher eatery in Oxnard, and the Gold Coast of California, which includes Ventura, Ojai, and Oxnard.

Tourist Info: Oxnard is a quiet city 60+ miles north west of Los Angeles accessible by Amtrak. The city has nice houses, nice beaches, and acres of fields to go strawberry picking. Oxnard hosts the California Strawberry Festival each year. The beaches are sparsely filled, except for some of the locals and few tourists surfing and sunbathing.

Also, the Herzog Wine Cellar offers a 15-30 minute self-guided tour.

Not far off of the coast of mainland California are the Channel Islands, beautiful and untouched. You can only access the islands by boat or small plane.

Jewish Info: While in Oxnard I bumped into many Jews, not Orthodox Jews, but Jews nonetheless. I also passed by the Chabad of Oxnard, which seems to be the only Orthodox shul in town.

Google Buzz

Contributed by: Ben Greenberg | Last Date of Travel: April 2008

san-diego_harborKosher Info: There are several kosher establishments in San Diego spread throughout the city. Orly’s Cafe and Bakery in the University City neighborhood offers the standard selection of bagels and breads as well as knishes, pizza, cakes, cookies and pastries. Across the street from each other are respectively The Place and The Dairy Place. Both restaurants are under the same ownership. The Place also offers a full selection of grocery items. In the restaurant section of The Place you can find shwarma, schnitzel, steak, soups and other standard fare. The Dairy Place offers fresh fish, pastas and salads. Inside The Dairy Place is also the largest selection of kosher wines, both local California kosher wines and exotic ones as well. The Place and The Dairy Place are situated within what is locally called The College Area as San Diego State University is within the neighborhood.

Tourist Info: San Diego is a beautiful city at the edge of the continental United States only a few short miles from Baja California in Mexico and a two hour drive south of Los Angeles. The city is also well known for The San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park as well as Sea World and Legoland.
