Balady’s Hatton Garden location, long considered one of the best kosher falafel spots in central London, is no longer under kosher supervision. The KLBD (Kosher London Beth Din) issued a kashrut alert in April confirming that Balady Restaurant on Leather Lane has closed its kosher certification.
What Kosher Consumers Need to Know
This is a critical distinction: a restaurant is still operating at the same Leather Lane address, but it is NOT under any kosher supervision. The KLBD alert explicitly warns that the establishment now operating on the premises should not be treated as kosher. If you’re heading to Hatton Garden and expecting a kosher meal at this address, you will not find one.
A London Kosher Staple
Balady built its reputation as an Israeli street food destination, known especially for its freshly fried falafel, sabich, shawarma in lafa, and a range of hummus dishes. The Hatton Garden location served as a go-to lunch spot for the kosher community working in and around the Holborn and Farringdon area, offering quick grab-and-go Middle Eastern food under KLBD supervision. It was a meat and pareve establishment that drew both kosher-keeping diners and the general Leather Lane lunch crowd.
Other Balady Locations
Balady has operated multiple locations across London over the years, including branches in Barnet, Temple Fortune, Camden, and Finchley. The Temple Fortune location previously announced its closure. Balady’s social media accounts indicate that KLBD kosher supervision is now available only for catering and events. Consumers should verify the kosher status of any Balady location directly with the KLBD before dining.
Balady Hatton Garden was located at 39-41 Leather Lane, Hatton Garden, London EC1N 7UY. It previously operated under KLBD (Kosher London Beth Din) supervision. The location is no longer kosher.
