BREAKING: Anita Gelato is Kosher Again in NYC’s UES

Anita Gelato is kosher again on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The gelato shop is once again under kosher supervision, as it was a few years ago, and for now the certification covers the Upper East Side location only.

The Shop’s Kosher History

The shop first picked up kosher certification in 2020, months after opening as the Israeli chain’s first New York City store. In 2021, the certifying agency clarified that it covered the imported gelato, sorbet and cones under the Rabbanut of Ra’anana rather than the store itself. National Kosher Supervision then dropped the certification in July 2022, and the new certificate now returns supervision to the same address. Its Tarzana shop in Los Angeles received Kosher LA certification in 2023.

Potential Kosher Expansion: Coming Soon

In conversation with YeahThatsKosher directly, the owner of Anita Gelato expressed interest in certifying more locations, stating that the Anita Gelato just outside of Penn Station & MSG on W33rd Street and 7th Avenue would be next. The Shop and the Menu

Anita Gelato began more than two decades ago in a small family kitchen in Tel Aviv, where Mama Anita made the homemade jams and her youngest son Nir prepared the gelato base. The original shop still operates in the city’s Neve Tzedek neighborhood.

The gelato is churned fresh in store, with Mama Anita’s jams still mixed into each batch. Stores serve more than 150 rotating flavors, with the selection changing from visit to visit, plus dairy-free sorbets, frozen yogurt and no-sugar-added options. More than 25 toppings range from fresh fruit and roasted nuts to the signature homemade jams. Best sellers include chocolate, pistachio cream, nougat wafer and Cookieman, a biscuit base with hazelnut chocolate and meringues. The Upper East Side shop also takes online orders for pickup and delivery.

Location, Hours and Kosher Certification

Anita Gelato is located at 1561 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10028. The shop is open Monday through Thursday from 10am to 11pm, and Friday through Sunday from 8am to midnight, and can be reached at 646-861-1957. It is kosher certified by National Kosher Supervision under Rabbi Aaron D. Mehlman, with a certificate valid through December 31, 2026. The certificate lists the store as dairy, non Cholov Yisroel and non Pas Yisroel, with a Shutuf Akum arrangement. Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are not under supervision, and the shop is not certified for Passover use.
