Despite Confusion, Mama’s Vegetarian in Philly is Still Closed; “Mama’s Falafel” Open

A new falafel shop opened in Philadelphia replacing Mama’s Vegetarian Falafel in August. Yet despite the similarity in its name, it is an entirely different restaurant from the well-esteemed vegetarian staple.

Mama’s Falafel, is owned by Yariv Noyman, an acquaintance of Mama’s Vegetarian Falafel, Haviv David. The previous owner retired in June of 2020, and worked with Noyman to open his own falafel store under the condition that the name and recipes stick with the family in case David re-opened the store.

Following the announcement from the Community Kashrus of Greater Philadelphia, many thought Mama’s Vegetarian returned. Yet despite being vegetarian and kosher, David clarified the new restaurant isn’t related to the family business, and the name was used without his permission.

The new business is actually: Mama’s Falafel.

Mama’s Falafel is kosher certified under Keystone-K and is located at 18 South 20th st. in Philadelphia.
