NEW Kosher Dairy Restaurant at Chabad of Pai

Israeli travelers in northern Thailand have a new place to eat. Chabad of Pai has opened a new dairy restaurant at its Chabad House in Pai, the mountain town in Mae Hong Son province that draws backpackers from Israel and around the world.

A Second Restaurant at the Chabad House

The dairy restaurant joins the Chabad House’s existing meat restaurant and its kosher grocery, which stocks Israeli products and staples for travelers cooking on their own. Shelves carry pitas and rolls alongside Israeli staples such as Bamba, Bissli, tahini and wine, with availability depending on stock. Both the meat and dairy Chabad House restaurants in Pai appear on the official restaurant list of Thai Kashrut Services, under the kosher certification of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor, the Chief Rabbi of Thailand.

The opening gives travelers in Pai separate meat and dairy options under one roof, a setup Chabad already runs in Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui.

Kosher in Pai

Pai is a staple of the northern Thailand backpacker loop, known for its hot springs, waterfalls and slow pace. Chabad of Pai anchors Jewish life in town with a synagogue and daily prayers, Torah classes, a women’s mikveh and a kindergarten. The Chabad House, run by Rabbi Mendy and Chani Zajac, sits near the Walking Street in the center of town. A short Torah class on a different topic, with tea and fresh cake, runs Sunday through Thursday at 2:30pm. Shabbat meals at the Chabad House are served with advance registration, and the Chabad House hosts travelers throughout the week.
