PopUp Bagels, the viral hot-bagel chain behind the “Grip, Rip and Dip” craze, opens its third Long Island shop this Friday, September 25, in Garden City, NY, practically the center of Long Island’s Nassau County. For kosher consumers in central Nassau County, this is the most consequential PopUp opening yet: the new store sits minutes from West Hempstead’s Jewish community and just down the road from Mineola’s hospitals, doctors’ offices, multiple shopping malls, and the Nassau County courthouses.
Another bonus, this PopUp Bagels locations is mere steps from Trader Joe’s.
The PopUp Bagels Concept
PopUp Bagels is not a typical bagel store. There is no slicing, no toasting and no breakfast sandwiches. Bagels come out of the oven hot, are sold whole in sets of three, and are meant to be torn apart and dipped into whipped schmears. The lineup is plain, salt, sesame, poppy seed and everything.
Founder Adam Goldberg launched the brand as a pandemic-era pop-up out of a backyard window in Westport, Connecticut. It has since become one of the fastest-growing food concepts in the country, with dozens of locations nationwide. YeahThatsKosher has tracked the chain’s kosher expansion, from its first Long Island shop in Roslyn to the growing list of certified locations and, most recently, the Westfield, New Jersey opening.
What Is Kosher at the Garden City Location
Like the chain’s other certified shops, Garden City operates under National Kosher Supervision (NKS). All of the bagels are kosher (pareve, non-Pas Yisroel), and exactly two schmears fall under the certification: the plain cream cheese and the scallion cream cheese (both dairy, non cholov yisroel). Every other schmear and flavored cream cheese on the menu is not covered, including the limited-edition Chocolate Chip Cannoli cream cheese being promoted for the grand opening. Packaged lox bearing an OU symbol is available.
The certified cream cheeses are regular dairy, and the bagels do not qualify as Pas Yisroel. As with any limited hechsher on a mainstream chain, the certification covers the named items, not the store as a whole.

The Garden City store marks its grand opening this Friday, September 25, from 7:00 to 11:00 AM with hot bagels and coffee from La Colombe.
PopUp Bagels is located at 900 Old Country Road in The Gallery at Westbury Plaza, Garden City, NY 11530, minutes from Roosevelt Field. Hours are Monday through Sunday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
