New Kosher Eatery (Good Fellas) to Open in Downtown Manhattan, NY

August 9th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in New York, News by Dani Klein - Admin

For those of us who work all the way downtown in the financial district of New York, a kosher restaurant closing is a sad day. So when Essex on Coney Downtown closed, it reduced our options significantly.

Replacing “Essex” will be a new restaurant called “Good Fellas” at 17 Trinity Place. And even though the type of cuisine is still unknown, it already has kosher supervision from the Orthodox Union (OU), which isn’t surprising considering their offices are directly above the new restaurant.

Good Fellas is set to open by or close to Labor Day 2011.

H/T to Koshertopia for the announcement.

Kosher News – End of Summer 2009

September 2nd, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in DC, New York, USA by Dani Klein - Admin

It’s been quite a busy summer in the kosher world. Restaurants opening and closing all around.
If you know about any recent closures or openings that we missed in this post, please comment below.

New York

  • Mr. Broadway reopens. After being shut down by the NY Dept. of Health (DOH) a week ago, the famous deli reopens its doors to us NYers.

Mr. Broadway is located at 1372 Broadway off of W38th st. You can order from their website: http://www.mrbroadwaykosher.com
  • NY Lunchbox opened this past Monday on W36th st. between 7th & 8th Avenues. The restaurant has a classy modern decor and a great menu, offering great focaccia and panini sandwiches, delicious soups (try the French Onion!), and fresh sushi (they make basically every roll right in front of you). The prices are also quite reasonable: A panini sandwich, soup, and soda for $7.99 – great deal. I had the opportunity to meet some of the owners, the mashgiach, and the chef on the day it opened. I definitely think it will steal some regular clients away from J2, Circa, and Vegetable Garden (especially since it is the closest kosher place to B&H on 9th Ave). I definitely recommend trying it out.

I’ve been following, tracking and reporting the following locations on Twitter for the past few weeks:

  • Schnitzel Express opened last week on W39th right off Broadway & 6th Avenue. They are a knockoff of the better known Schnitzi in Brooklyn and originally from Israel. They offer 8 flavored Schnitzels – sandwich style.
  • Today, Colbeh in Midtown is opening a 2nd location down the block from its existing location on W39th st. between 5th & 6th Avenues. The new Colbeh will offer a somewhat different menu, and be available for catered events.
  • Maoz Vegetarian, an Israeli falafel joint, with 3 existing NY locations, is in process of opening a 4th, near Times Square, on the corner of W40th & 7th Avenue. They make a mighty fine falafel ball.

Brooklyn, NY

  • Mendy’s on Coney has replaced the old Essex on Coney, on Coney Island Ave. off of Ave. J. We lost one deli, and got an equally good one in its place.
  • Essex on Coney moved to Avenue M, and is now known as Essex on Coney / Caraville Glatt (it took over a non kosher restaurant named Caraville). The space is large and spacious for catered events. 1910 Avenue M.
  • Benny’s Pizzeria Ristorante opened over the past few months and has been doing well. It serves real mozzarella pizza, paninis, pasta, and other Italian dishes. The food was really good, and the place was packed mid-Summer when we came on a Motzei Shabbat – even when other places in Brooklyn refuse to open over the summer. 1418 Avenue J.

Bronx, NY

  • Kosher Mexican cuisine, Carlos & Gabby’s will be opening in Riverdale, NY. It will be replacing the kosher Chinese takeout place Dumplings. 5685 Riverdale Ave.

Washington, DC

  • The JCC Cafe in DC was forced to close this week after non-kosher meat was found on premises, and their hasgacha pulled out. It is unclear whether they will reopen or not. For now, it seems that Eli’s is one of the only options left for a quality kosher meal in DC. See: http://yeahthatskosher.com/2008/07/washington-dc/

✈ Keeping Kosher in Downtown Manhattan, NY

February 2nd, 2009 | 6 Comments | Posted in New York, USA by Dani Klein - Admin

Contributed by: Dani Klein  |  Last Date of Travel: January 2009

I am currently serving jury duty for the City of New York. Hopefully, today will be the last day, and I wont get called to sit on trial (I do believe serving as a juror is important, but I do have other things going on in my life). Luckily, there are some kosher options not super far from the court houses located in downtown Manhattan.

Kosher Info: Yesterday I ate at Broadway Kosher Cafe, a typical dairy joint found in Manhattan, serving pizza, pasta, falafel, and similar grub. The place is downstairs, so dont bother if you’re in a wheelchair. The pizza was really good. Most NY pizza is good, but still, it was good. Wasn’t such a fan of the vibe of the place, but since it’s competition, Circa, closed down around the corner, it’s the only kosher pizza place in the area. Boradway Kosher Cafe is located at 160 Broadway off of Cortland, and around the corner from my favorite place to shop: Century21.

Today I tried Pita Express, a Glatt Kosher Israeli style place serving shwarma, falafel, baby chicken, and the like. Very Middle Eastern, and very yummy. I ordered the shwarma, and received baby chicken instead. Maybe the ran out of shwarma before Shabbat? Either way, it was good. The service was fast and friendly. The place itself wasnt spic and span, but I dont expect that from a small Israeli place. Pita Express is located on 15 Ann st. off Broadway, around the corner from J&R (the massive computer / electronics store), City Hall, Pace University, and the Brooklyn Bridge. You can also order online: http://pitaexpressnyc.com

Also found in Downtown Manhattan:

  • Kosher Luncheonette (Dairy), 56 Fulton Street, Between Cliff Street and John Street
  • Essex on Coney Downtown, 17 Trinity Pl
I ate here about a year ago. It reminded me of Kosher Delight but not as good. It is a fast food deli. Nothing special. It is behind the OU office building and also near some great shopping: SYMS.
  • The Kosher Subway on Water st. is now closed.

Tourist Info: Ground Zero is a tourist attraction, but there is really nothing to look at other than construction and a massive hole. There is actually some great shopping downtown. Century21 is probably the best department store in the city, it’s just an amazing discounter. SYMS is also good for mens suits and other attire. There is also J&R, voted as New York’s #1 electronics retailer by Zagat. Fulton st. is a great place to find stuff to buy on the street with many vendors out and about. About a 10 minute walk north of City Hall is Canal st. which is filled with many vendors selling knock off handbags, sunglasses, scarfs, and other faux name brand items. You can also buy many cultural Chinese and other Asian products there as well. Great place to get sushi plates and chopsticks.

This was a picture I took in the Summer of 2001. I was on a ferry to Ellis Island.

Battery Park is a nice place to have a picnic and take pictures with lady Liberty. From Battery Park you can take a ferry to Ellis Island and/or the State of Liberty. Nearby is the ferry to Staten Island, pointless, unless you have something to do on that island other than dumping your trash.

About a 10 minute walk from Battery Park is the South Street Seaport, which is basically a mall and a set of historic boats. It is a very pretty area, worth bringing the camera for, especially with the views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.

Jewish Info: Downtown you will find the Museum of Jewish Heritage. While it mainly focuses on the Holocaust, it frequently has other exhibits on other Jewish issues. The museum is located at 36 Battery Pl, right on the Hudson River. You can get some gorgeous views of the Statue of Liberty from there.

This region is mainly a financial and tourist area. Synagogues can be found nearby in the Lower East Side, Greenwich Village, and further north near NYU.
