Many travelers pay for international roaming or buy separate eSIM plans without realizing that some credit cards already include free global mobile data as a built-in benefit. Through a partnership between Visa and GigSky, eligible cardholders can access complimentary international data in more than 175 countries, simply by using the right Visa credit card and activating the benefit before a trip.
This is a quiet perk that is not advertised prominently by banks, but it can meaningfully reduce travel costs and simplify staying connected abroad.
What the Visa GigSky Benefit Includes
Visa’s partnership with GigSky provides free data-only eSIM plans to qualifying cardholders. These plans work internationally and activate through the GigSky mobile app.
The benefit depends on the tier of Visa card you have.
Visa Infinite cardholders receive:
- One complimentary 3GB global data plan
- Valid for 15 days once activated
- Available once per year
- 30 percent discount on additional GigSky data plans after the free allotment is used
Visa Signature cardholders receive:
- One complimentary 1GB global data plan
- Valid for 15 days once activated
- Available once per year
- 20 percent discount on additional GigSky data plans after the free allotment is used
The data is for internet use only. It does not include voice calling or SMS texting, but it supports navigation, messaging apps, email, rideshare apps, travel bookings, and general browsing.
Which Credit Cards Qualify for the Free Data
The key requirement is that the card must be branded as Visa Signature or Visa Infinite. The issuing bank and card name matter less than the Visa tier printed on the card.
Common Visa Infinite cards that qualify for the 3GB free plan include:
- Chase Sapphire Reserve
- Capital One Venture X
- U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve
- Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite
- United Club Card
- Select private bank Visa Infinite cards
Common Visa Signature cards that qualify for the 1GB free plan include:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred
- Ink Business Preferred
- United Explorer Card
- United Quest Card
- World of Hyatt Credit Card
- Marriott Bonvoy Boundless
- Many mid-tier Visa Signature cards issued by major banks
Not every Visa card qualifies. Standard Visa cards without Signature or Infinite branding do not include the free data benefit.
How to Activate and Use the Benefit
Using the benefit requires a few steps, but it is straightforward.
First, your phone must support eSIM technology and be unlocked. Most newer iPhones, Google Pixel devices, and Samsung Galaxy phones qualify.
Second, download the GigSky app and create an account.
Third, add your eligible Visa card directly inside the app and set it as the default payment method. Apple Pay or Google Pay will not trigger eligibility.
Once the card is verified, the complimentary data plan becomes available to claim. After claiming it, you have up to one year to activate the plan. The 15-day countdown begins only when you activate the eSIM.
When you arrive at your international destination, the eSIM connects automatically to supported local networks.
Why This Benefit Matters for Travelers
International roaming fees can be unpredictable and expensive, especially for families or frequent travelers. Buying local SIM cards or third-party eSIMs also adds friction to travel planning.
This Visa benefit offers:
- No extra cost for data you may already be entitled to
- Coverage in over 175 countries
- No physical SIM card required
- Easy activation through a single app
- Ongoing discounts after the free data is used
For travelers who already carry a qualifying Visa card, this is one of the simplest ways to stay connected abroad without additional spending.
Important Limitations to Know
The free data is limited to once per year per eligible card. If you travel frequently or need more data, you will need to purchase additional plans, though the Visa discount applies.
This benefit is data-only. Travelers who rely heavily on traditional calls or SMS will need to use Wi-Fi calling, messaging apps, or a separate voice solution.
Eligibility can vary slightly by issuer and region, and cardholders should confirm availability inside the GigSky app before traveling.
