A popular kosher burger joint in the heart of Brooklyn is set to close its doors just months after opening. Amsterdam Burger Co. (ABC), located on Avenue J in Midwood, announced on social media today that it will cease operations after dinner service tomorrow night, Thursday June 5th, bringing a swift and unfortunate end to what many hoped would be a long-lasting addition to the neighborhood’s kosher dining scene.
ABC was originally a popular upscale burger restaurant on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for many years, as well as a short-lived location in the 5 Towns a decade ago, before moving its full operations to Brooklyn.
A Short But Tasty Run
Amsterdam Burger Co. officially opened on August 15, 2024, offering a menu centered around classic and creative burger options, along with non-dairy milkshakes. The fast-casual eatery brought a much-needed modern burger concept to Midwood, a neighborhood known for its dense concentration of kosher establishments.
One of the restaurant’s most memorable offerings was the Jelly Donut Burger, a limited-edition menu item created during Chanukah. More recently, they launched a steak menu in an effort to appeal to diners seeking something heartier. Despite these efforts, the restaurant’s run has come to an early end.
The Harsh Realities of the Restaurant Business
As many in the kosher restaurant space know, the industry is not for the faint of heart. Operating costs, coupled with the high expectations of kosher diners, create constant challenges. While Amsterdam Burger Co. received praise for its inventive menu and convenient location, it wasn’t enough to sustain the business long-term.
Final Days to Visit
Diners who haven’t yet visited Amsterdam Burger Co., or who were planning to return, have less than two days left to do so. This week marks the last opportunity to enjoy one of their signature burgers, pareve shakes, or steak dishes before the restaurant shuts down permanently.
