History was made today in the kosher dining world. Mutra, the Jerusalem-inspired kosher restaurant that opened in North Miami only 15 months ago, has been awarded One Michelin Star by the Michelin Guide Florida 2026 — making it the first strictly kosher restaurant in the United States to receive a Michelin star. The announcement came this afternoon as part of the guide’s first-ever statewide Florida selection, which for the first time covers every region in the state.
MAZAL TOV CHEF RAZ and TEAM MUTRA
A Milestone for Kosher Dining

For years, the question in the kosher food world was whether a fully certified kosher restaurant could ever break through at the highest levels of fine-dining recognition. Today, Mutra answered that question definitively. Chef and owner Raz Shabtai has built something at his North Miami restaurant that the most discerning food critics in the world have now recognized as exceptional, not just exceptional for a kosher restaurant, but exceptional, full stop.
The Michelin Guide described its 2026 Florida selection as covering 200 restaurants across 41 cuisines. Mutra was one of just two new One Star recipients in the entire state, joining Emelina in West Palm Beach as a first-time honoree. The recognition places Mutra alongside the most celebrated fine dining restaurants in Florida.
This is not Mutra’s first signal that it was playing at a different level. In late 2025, Mutra became the only kosher restaurant named to Resy’s inaugural Resy 100 list, a national ranking of restaurants that define American dining culture. The Michelin star is the natural continuation of that trajectory.
Who Is Chef Raz Shabtai

Raz Shabtai is an Israeli-born chef whose resume spans New York’s Nur and Israel’s Basta and Raphael before landing in South Florida. The restaurant he built in North Miami is named for his grandmother, and the word mutra translates to “a rain of blessings” in Hebrew. Those roots are not decorative. They shape everything from the sourcing philosophy to how dishes are named and plated.
Shabtai’s approach, which he calls “cooking forward,” takes deeply traditional dishes rooted in his Jerusalem upbringing and reconstructs them using contemporary technique and South Florida’s local produce. The restaurant works with ten local farms and pulls influences from Levantine, Galilean, North African, Uzbek, and Baladi culinary traditions. Everything is made in-house from scratch.
The result is a menu that refuses categorization. Dishes like “1 Perfect Falafel” (a single croquette with tomato gel and za’atar), “Chicken Liver Dreaming to Become Foie Gras” (a paté with date honey and pistachio crumble), and “1000 Layers Steak” with tahi-amba and fire-roasted peppers have drawn both the kosher dining community and the broader culinary world to this 60-seat space on a quiet stretch of 123rd Street.

What This Means for Kosher Diners
The Michelin star matters beyond bragging rights. It is the most respected third-party validation in the global fine dining world, and it now belongs to a fully certified kosher restaurant. For kosher travelers who have spent decades being told that serious fine dining and kashrus supervision are mutually exclusive, this is a significant moment.
It also puts Miami on the map as a destination for kosher fine dining in a way that no award has before. South Florida already ranks among the top kosher dining markets in North America. A Michelin-starred kosher restaurant in the region elevates the entire scene.
The practical implication is straightforward: if you have been waiting for a reason to book a trip to Miami and make a reservation at Mutra, you now have the most authoritative reason in the food world.
