Staying at “The Crown” Churchill Suites in Miami Beach, FL

December 11th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in Florida, Reviews by Dani Klein - Admin

Many of you remember the Crown as a Jewish hotspot on Collins Avenue, which it was … for decades. My grandparents used to frequent the Crown Hotel for years, enjoying its prime location on the corner of 41st street and Collins Ave, as well as right off of the Boardwalk and the Atlantic Ocean (although I think the boardwalk was, and perhaps still is, the bigger attraction for them and many Jews traveling down to South Florida).

I remember from my early teens the hotel’s Jewish “scene” on Shabbat, its large minyanim, kosher dining room and kitchen, and its busy pool area, which my family often used and rented chairs at, despite staying at a different location. It was an old-school place, with an old-school Jewish vibe.

What was once an old-school Jewish hotel, is now a residential tower with rentable units overlooking the ocean, walking distance to Miami Beach’s kosher hub.

Today, the hotel is no longer. It is now a mix of short term rentals and condos. The building has retained its overall look and feel from the outside, except it’s now blue, not pink. The radio-looking-tower still remains as a distinguishing external feature.

Pistachio Grill in Miami Beach is No Longer Kosher

October 24th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in Florida, News by Dani Klein - Admin

According to the Kosher Miami hechsher, Pistachio Grill located at 740 41st Street in Miami Beach is NO LONGER under Kosher Miami supervision and certification.

Miami Kosher has not been asked by the new owners to give certification to them, and it is uncertain how they plan to operate the restaurant, i.e. Kosher or Not Kosher.

For now, one must assume that the restaurant is not Kosher.

Where to go (or not to go) for Yeshiva Week Vacation (Winter Break)

January 26th, 2011 | 3 Comments | Posted in Travel Tips, USA by Dani Klein - Admin

It’s that time of year, when Orthodox Jewish families take vacation when their kids in yeshivas are off from school (that ranges between the last couple weeks of January through mid-February [including Presidents Week - third Monday in Feb]).

The decision to (or not to) go to the locations I mention below will depend on whether or not you want to be with swarms of other families on vacation, willing to wait on long lines at Kosher eateries (assuming they exist where you go), or want a more secluded vacationing experience.

Here are the top 5 spots that American Orthodox Jews tend to vacation, en masse, during this time period each year (in no particular order):

  • Orlando, FL
Between all the Disney parks, Universal Studios, Sea World, other entertainment options, loads of hotel options – including numerous kosher vacation rentals, as well as a handful of kosher eatery options, the Orlando / Kissimmee Florida area has become a popular destination for many frum families during Yeshiva Week.
  • The Poconos, PA
There are numerous hotels, ski resorts, and bed & breakfasts that cater to the influx of Jewish families during this time. The many ski ready lodges are a major attraction for families with kids and teens who want to be active on the vacation. Popular ski slopes include Camelback Mountain, Shawnee Mountain, Jack Frost Mountain, and a bunch of others.
