Coffee Bean, the ever popular Los Angeles caffeine shop is opening up 4 shops in Manhattan… the first within the next 2 weeks – by the end of August – at 1412 Broadway on the corner of 39th street. The California coffee chain is set to launch 4 locations in NYC in the coming year.

Their shops are set to serve 32 flavors of their custom-roasted coffee, 30 types of tea, ice-blended drinks, and an array of bakery items.

Additionally, they’ll also be serving up some free Wi-Fi, something Starbucks has cut back on.

It’s that time of year, when Orthodox Jewish families take vacation when their kids in yeshivas are off from school (that ranges between the last couple weeks of January through mid-February [including Presidents Week - third Monday in Feb]).


The decision to (or not to) go to the locations I mention below will depend on whether or not you want to be with swarms of other families on vacation, willing to wait on long lines at Kosher eateries (assuming they exist where you go), or want a more secluded vacationing experience.

Here are the top 5 spots that American Orthodox Jews tend to vacation, en masse, during this time period each year (in no particular order):

  • Orlando, FL
    Between all the Disney parks, Universal Studios, Sea World, other entertainment options, loads of hotel options – including numerous kosher vacation rentals, as well as a handful of kosher eatery options, the Orlando / Kissimmee Florida area has become a popular destination for many frum families during Yeshiva Week.

  • The Poconos, PA
    There are numerous hotels, ski resorts, and bed & breakfasts that cater to the influx of Jewish families during this time. The many ski ready lodges are a major attraction for families with kids and teens who want to be active on the vacation. Popular ski slopes include Camelback Mountain, Shawnee Mountain, Jack Frost Mountain, and a bunch of others.

  • Miami, FL
    Miami is a place that Orthodox Jews love, especially the New Yorkers, for both the winter and Pesach. Between the warm weather, plethora of Kosher restaurants and beautiful scenery, no wonder the “Jewish Snowbirds” fly down for winter. Just keep in mind that the restaurants will be packed, and waiting times can exceed to way over an hour at some.

  • Los Angeles, CA
    Another favorite “Jewish Snowbird” locale, LA has great weather and an even larger selection of Kosher restaurants than Miami. This is not as popular an option for the many East Coast-ers seeking warmth, but enough will swarm the streets of Pico Blvd. this time of year that many locals will notice … and probably flee to Mexico themselves.

  • Vail, CO
    For the kids whose families head to Vail, you are the envy of your classmates. A winter vacation, actually celebrating winter by skiing, snowboarding, and being active in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Don’t think Chabad hasn’t noticed. They’ve set up shop in Vail for just this purpose.

Hey guys, I just saw the following announcement online, and I was super thrilled! So, whatever your thoughts on JetBlue or EL AL, you can’t deny that this is extremely convenient, especially for those Americans who find that in order to get to Israel they had to fly to New York anyways. Now, it’s all in one built in cost, one ticket, one purchase, and you don’t have to transfer your baggage. I highlighted some key points below in italics.

JetBlue Airways, which has a great flight map throughout the American Northeast & West Coast, and Israel’s national airline, EL AL, announced today that they intend to sign an interline agreement, providing new and convenient connecting options for both EL AL and JetBlue customers wishing to travel between the U.S. and Israel. Beginning in September, customers will be able to purchase a single ticket for travel on flights of both carriers in one simple transaction, and enjoy seamless connecting service to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport from most JetBlue cities via New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

New York’s JFK Airport is EL AL’s leading gateway into the United States, with as many as three daily flights to/from Tel Aviv, and is also JetBlue’s main hub with service to 50+ cities across the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Customers traveling on the two carriers will enjoy the convenience of purchasing and traveling on a single e-ticket. SushiKo is a modern sushi restaurant right in the heart of the Jewish community of Los Angeles on Pico Blvd. The sushi is outstanding, and there are TV screens which allow you to watch the chefs making your sushi live. Highly recommended.

Delice Bakery is a delicious French bakery on Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA. They offer a variety of different breads, fancy cakes, pastries and cookies. My personal favorite are the croissants, either plain or chocolate filled.

Subway is a deli restaurant chain that is popular for its freshly baked bread and meat subs. We checked out one of the kosher Subways in the U.S., this one on Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA. They offer a variety of different breads, meats, vegetables, and sauces. They’re also open late which makes them quite convenient.
