New Soho Kosher Restaurant to Open: Jezebel

An odd name, and an odd location (for a Kosher restaurant), Jezebel is seeking to create another unique kosher experience in NYC, along the likes of Pardes, Mike's Bistro, and Basil. According to this recent WSJ article, Jezebel may be the first kosher restaurant to serve nonmevushal wine (unpasterized kosher wine), which is a huge challenge considering that the pourer of the wine must not only be Jewish, but observant, plus it'll be difficult for them to pour it into real wine glasses, a challenge for a a would-be fancy (hipster) restaurant.

Jezebel is also relatively unique in that they plan on staying open on Friday night serving prepaid Shabbat meals. Supervision for the restaurant is by Rabbi Aaron Mehlman of the National Kosher Supervision agency, whom many consider more lenient than the national kashrut agencies like the OU, OK, or CRC.

Hopefully, the gold-plated shofar door handle will be an added unique quality to the already uniquely odd upscale restaurant planned to open shortly. We look forward to trying it.

  • I would love to be able to try it, but between the hashgacha, non-mevushal wine and the name (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jezebel) I just cannot get on board. You’ll have to let me know how it is.  I will say that after reading http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/07/16/at-jezebel-the-cocktails-must-be-kosher/ I would love to taste their martinis…and I’m a scotch man
